What price have Claremont citizens paid?

"If they're (Wheelabrator) only worth $2 million you better shut it down."
- City Manager Guy Santagate, Eagle Times, February 6, 2005 referring to the recent NH Department of Revenue Administration valuation of the Wheelabrator facility

Follow the Money...
  • Claremont stands to lose $1.4 million in property taxes for the years 2004-2007 if a tax abatement based on the DRA valuation is allowed for Wheelabrator.

  • Claremont could possibly lose as much as $200,000 in education revenue a year with the current DRA valuation of the property.

  • Claremont electric rate payers have been overcharged an estimated $20+ million for Wheelabrator's expensive power from 1987-2003.

  • Claremont citizens' trash disposal fees pay approximately 25% of all NH-VT Solid Waste Project expenses through contracts with Wheelabrator.  Those expenses include Wheelabrator's property taxes.

Some costs we know...
  • Claremont residents continue to pay some of the highest trash disposal rates in the state.

  • Wheelabrator's more than 8.5 million pounds of toxic pollution has cost us our rights to clean air and a clean environment.

  • Wheelabrator's trespassing toxic pollution has threatened the health and future of our children and put them at risk for asthma, learning disabilities, and hyperactivity.

  • Many believe Wheelabrator's incinerator has made our City a target for imported trash and damaged our image and community pride.

Some costs we still don't know...
  • What is the cost of impacts to Claremont's infrastructure from the approximately 350 trucks a week that deliver garbage to the Wheelabrator incinerator from 14 VT Project communities, 14 other NH Project communities as well as FROM ALL OVER the Northeast?  Since 1987 more trash has been burned at Wheelabrator than Claremont would produce in 100 years.

  • What are the environmental impacts to our lands and waters?

  • How much has our public health been affected by Wheelabrator's pollution?

  • What are the threats to Claremont's Sugar River drinking water supply from the more than 300,000 tons of toxic ash produced by Wheelabrator now buried in the Newport ash landfill?
